Nesting mallards like to choose sheltered spaces with a lot of vegetation, so the female can stay safe and camouflaged while she sits on her nest.

Balcony planters or well-planted rooftop terraces look like great nesting spots to mallard ducks, but safety from predators can come at a price. If the nesting spot is too high (newly hatched ducklings can usually fall about two storeys without hurting themselves, because they are light and fluffy) or in an enclosed courtyard, the ducklings are trapped.

In this video, Toronto Wildlife Centre’s rescue team contains a mallard family on a rooftop that is too high for the babies to drop to the ground.
